What did we say about the Coastal Protection Works?

Background

The Eurobodalla Shire Council is currently considering three long-term solutions to provide protection against coastal erosion at Long Beach.  The three structures currently under consideration are:

- a vertical concrete seawall

- a sloped rock revetment

- a stepped geo-textile sandbag structure

Council ran a drop-in session on Tuesday 18 June and gave the community an opportunity to provide feedback by 10 July.

We like transparency, so here's what we submitted as an Association.

Feedback

The Long Beach Community Association represents a diverse mix of community members with differing views and therefore we will not be backing any one particular option for the coastal protection works. However, we would like to provide comments/feedback on community expectations and the outcomes the protection works should aim to achieve. These include:

In addition, planning for the Long Beach foreshore protection works should give consideration to broader community needs in terms of foreshore access, and where they might be located along Bay Road, including:

We also note that there is an additional community-developed solution being put forward to Eurobodalla Shire Council. It is a combination of Option 2 (rock wall) and Option 3 (geotextile bags). We encourage the Executive, Project Managers and the designers to consider the proposal as part of the concept design phase.

We would also like to request that the Long Beach Community Association continue to be included and consulted going forward. In particular, once the preferred option has been identified, we would appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the conceptual design phase of the preferred option. This will ensure that community views are considered prior to finalising the detailed design.

Community garden

The new Community Garden for Long Beach and Maloneys Beach residents is alive and growing.  They have been successful in securing two rounds of grant funding to help bolster their facilities.

The first round of funding from The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and was used to purchase fencing material to protect the produce from kangaroos. Members of the community came together to install the fence during a working bee and it looks fantastic!

They were also delighted to have been recently awarded a grant from the IMB Bank Community Foundation to build a small tool and storage shed with shaded potting area. This will help The Plotters actively grow fresh produce for its members and for sharing with the broader community.
